The Dresden University of Fine Arts, in cooperation with the Dresden State Arts Collections, cordially invites you to the digital symposium HANDMADE TALES – Craft in Contemporary Art Studies from 24 November – 4 December 2020.
The symposium is an event of the EU4ART alliance. It involves the art academies in Budapest, Riga, Rome and Dresden. EU4ART is one of the 17 alliances that have come together for the first time to form European Universities. Since November 2019, the EU has been supporting their transnational activities with funds from the ERASMUS + program. The German universities are also supported by the German Academic Exchange Service.
The symposium is directed to students and teachers of the four partner institutions and intends to establish an exchange with other German and European art academies
The first week of the symposium will be dedicated to a series of digital lectures. Experts from various disciplines with unique perspectives will shed light on the potential of craft practices in the context of contemporary art and artistic teaching at universities. Central theoretical questions will also be debated, as well as the role of material, craft processes and their significance for students’ artistic development. The online lectures will be publicly available. More information will follow shortly.

On 26-27 November, the digital symposium Museums and Universities of Diversity by the Dresden State Art Collections will follow with the focus “How Can Museums and Art Universities Take an Active Approach to Living and Learning Diversity?”. Together with experts from the fields of neuroscience, art, art education and architecture, possibilities regarding how learning processes in museums and art universities can be made more diverse will be discussed through keynote speeches, discussion groups and practical examples.

The second week will be devoted to artistic practice in the workshops at the Dresden University of Fine Arts and the Dresden Graphics Workshop. Students will have the opportunity to take part in an etching workshop with artist Cornelia Renz and a woodcut and block printing workshop with artist Jan Brokof. Another one-day workshop led by Adrienne Goehler will deal with questions of artistic practice and sustainability.
The number of participants is limited to 8 students. HfBK students (faculty I) are invited to participate and can apply with a small portfolio and short letter of motivation (max. 1 page) to eu4art@hfbk-dresden.de by 13 November 2020.
Basic prior knowledge is required for the etching workshop. As part of the workshop week, the Salzverlag will present its publishing work and artists’ books published since 2011.
