Biography

Marco Valerio Gallo – Biography Marco Valerio Gallo, storyboard artist and illustrator, was born in Rome. He began his professional career in 2006. He has worked with leading Italian film productions, creating storyboards for cinema, television, advertising and TV series, and collaborating with numerous directors, including Andrej Končalovskij, Gabriele Mainetti, G. Salvatores,
Paolo Genovese, Paolo Sorrentino, Ricky Tognazzi, S. Castellitto, Carlo Verdone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Paolo Sorrentino, Ferzan Özpetek, Valerio Mastandrea, Valeria Golino and many more. In the advertising sector, he has worked for brands such as Honda, Toyota, Missoni, Campari, Ferrero, Ponti, Angelini,
De Cecco, Mulino Bianco, Birra Moretti, TIM, MoneyGram and Maserati. In 2016, he won the La Pellicola D’Oro National Film Award for Best Storyboard Artist for Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot by G. Mainetti, becoming the first Italian storyboard artist to receive this accolade, which he won again in 2018 for Brutti e Cattivi by Cosimo Gomez, in 2022 for Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti, and in 2023 in the TV series category for Le Fate Ignoranti by Ferzan Özpetek.

The Art of Comics, Storyboarding and Film Painting
Teaching programme

The programme of this course has been designed to provide students with all the knowledge and tools needed to pursue a career as a storyboard artist or visualiser in the film and advertising industries – professional roles that combine technical expertise with a strong artistic aptitude.

  • Introduction and presentation of the course
  • Film and advertising storyboarding – images as a narrative tool and sequential art
  • Film terminology and storyboard education
  • Shots, fields and planes in cinema and comics
  • Grammar of cinematic language
  • Storytelling and directing techniques
  • Composition, planning and balance of framing/photographic composition
  • Introduction to perspective and the design of three-dimensional space
  • Digital tools and media (documentation)
  • Previsualisation techniques and exercises
  • Screenplay analysis and storyboard design
  • Cinematic illustration
