Learning Objectives

The course aims to develop students’ skills and professionalism in the field of cinematography and performing arts.
The demands of an increasingly complex market and the spread of new technologies in the production of artistic imagery have generated a process of change in the social functions and modes of production of traditional artistic genres, influencing work processes linked to the culture industry, particularly in the cinematographic and audiovisual sector.
Graduates of the course must:
– possess adequate technical and practical mastery of methods and content relating to the areas of work that revolve around the preparation, production and post-production of cinematographic work;
– possess the methodological tools necessary to acquire specific skills for initiating and following all stages of the preparation of a cinematographic production;
– be able to use the knowledge acquired effectively to follow the production work involved in the making of a cinematographic production;
– possess the appropriate skills and tools to oversee all stages of post-production of a film.
In this regard, the course aims to provide students with specialist skills and knowledge of organisational and professional techniques and models, so that a project can be transformed into a multimedia product intended for various Italian and foreign film markets. Film production, and audiovisual production in general, despite being an artistic and cultural vocation, is aimed at an audience with ever-changing aspirations and viewing habits, and is part of a market ruled by specific economic laws that influence its development and evolution. The creation of a multimedia product therefore requires the acquisition of the technical, managerial and rational tools necessary for modern strategic marketing activities, enabling audiovisual companies to address various competitive dynamics and achieve profitability and self-financing objectives.

Career prospects

In terms of specialist skills, the course aims to provide the job market with professionals who have not only technical and artistic skills, but also managerial and entrepreneurial skills, capable of working within public and private institutions and in full harmony with local authorities. As graduates of the course are provided with the necessary skills, they will be able to work in various professional areas of the entertainment industry: from production staff (production supervisor, production manager) to production organisers. Graduates will also be able to work as part of the technical team overseeing the making of the film, from entertainment agents to casting directors, right through to operational and creative phases as directors.

Entry requirements

Admission to the second-level academic diploma course in “Cinematography and Performing Arts” is granted on the basis of a four-year academic diploma under the old curriculum, or a first- or second-level academic diploma obtained from an Academy of Fine Arts, subject to the entrance process. Graduates of the three-year courses in Photography and Video, Audiovisual Theory and Techniques, Multimedia and Technological Arts, and Set Design are admitted directly without having to complete the admission process.
The course is also open to graduates in other disciplines—e.g. DAMS, ISIA—as well as to students from universities in the European Union or from non-EU institutions, provided they have obtained at least 180 ECTS credits. The entrance exam for the course consists of an interview; the committee will assess the candidate’s technical skills and motivation by testing their basic knowledge of cinematography.
Candidates must also submit a portfolio via email, in a single PDF file, containing a selection of their work, which may include videos, photographs and visual artworks.

Type of final assessment

The final assessment consists of the discussion of a theoretical thesis on cinematography to be agreed with the supervisor, and the completion of a practical project, short film or medium-length film, to be agreed with the supervisor.
