Learning Objectives
The second-level academic diploma course in Jewellery Design, which is part of the Fashion Culture and Technology Course, provides practical, theoretical and specialised training in all aspects of the design and promotion of the role of the designer in this sector.
Developing professional skills in jewellery design and creation, expertise in production methods, and knowledge of the basic techniques of artisan jewellery, mass-produced jewellery, and historical and designer jewellery will be the operational tools of a training programme that aims to facilitate the creative potential of each individual and thus train professionals in the field of design. The study and understanding of the history of jewellery, its formal development throughout the ages, will be the cornerstone of the creative process.
The aim of the course is to train designers who can meet the demands and requirements of an increasingly competitive market for innovative solutions and collections that can compete with the various, more established offerings in the jewellery sector. Using a practical theoretical approach that draws on basic training in design and all its necessary additions in new technologies, students acquire professional methods and skills in designing and implementing the creative process of creating “precious” items.
The course is structured around theoretical and research workshops on the subject and combined with practical workshops.
The Jewellery project is overseen in all its stages of execution. Know-how in prototyping for the purpose of developing a proposal that takes into account all the necessary factors for its market success. The first year of the course consists of basic theoretical training activities supplemented by practical activities involving research and laboratory work. The second year builds on and refines what was learned in the first year, with the help of new technologies and more. The evolution of the relationship between clothing and jewellery, the historical influences, the key figures and leading players, and the various historical and contemporary collections that have made jewellery an immortal and coveted subject will be topics covered in the cognitive framework.
Career prospects
Graduates of the course will be prepared not only for careers in the specific field of jewellery design, but also for other professional sectors such as communication, marketing, trend forecasting, creative direction, production and management. The role of jewellery designer requires specific professional skills, which are taught to designers in their training. Training that ensures employment in market-oriented companies and in the fashion industry, as well as in all multimedia circles that focus on luxury accessories.
Entry requirements
The second-level course in “Jewellery Design” is open to those who hold a first-level academic diploma in “Fashion Culture and Technology”, “Fashion Design”, or a related degree/master’s degree. A committee composed of course lecturers will assess the individual applications of candidates who hold other first and second level academic diplomas and bachelor’s/master’s degrees.
Type of final assessment
The final assessment consists of discussing a theoretical thesis and creating a jewellery design project and its design dynamics.
In addition, depending on the jewellery-related topics that candidates will explore in their research programme, they may be required to produce prototypes of the collection they present. The design and implementation phases and the final product must be in keeping with the advanced level of the course.
