Learning Objectives

The aim of the second-level course in Environmental Art and Experimental Languages is to promote and encourage a more precise understanding and planning in the field of intervention, both in artificial, man-made environments, such as cities, and in natural environments, such as the countryside and landscapes, as the most limited space for an event, through critical knowledge and the use of appropriate methodologies and tools, including experimental ones. The course provides specific training and advanced skills in understanding the languages and codes of decoration, together with multidisciplinary preparation in the artistic and cultural field, with particular reference to the theoretical study of those artistic phenomena that have characterised the past, and to the knowledge of the practices and the new languages of contemporary art. The central themes around the training activities are guidance, experimentation, artistic research and production, and the transmission of advanced knowledge relating to design methodology and its practical application. This educational programme, designed to provide in-depth knowledge of the theories of materials and the technological aspects of art, aims to develop the ability to interpret the complex phenomena related to the art world, its contexts, its dissemination, and the interpretation of reality and contemporary imagery. To this end, the workshops will be structured as a place for theoretical and practical experience, in a specific but integrated training programme.

Career prospects

Employment prospects include artistic activities in urban and suburban territories, including participation in 2% art competitions, the world of visual arts and related specialist professions in the field of aesthetic and artistic operations, communication and promotion of art, as well as teaching in the relevant teaching categories and in all operational sectors of the productive, artistic and cultural world.

Entry requirements

Those who already hold a first-level academic diploma in Decoration or an equivalent first-level diploma or degree can enrol in the second-level course in Decoration. The transition from first- to second-level, within the Department of Visual Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, or for students who hold a first-level diploma in Decoration, is prioritised and conducted directly. For other students, admission is based on an entrance exam.

Type of final assessment

The final exam consists of the discussion of a thesis developed with the guidance of two speakers, one for the artistic/workshop part, the other for the theoretical-historical part. The thesis must be based on an appropriate research methodology involving unique and original personal work on a specific integrated project.
