Learning Objectives

The course of study for the first-level academic diploma from the School of Artistic Design for Business, Editorial Graphic Design course, aims to develop artistic and professional skills which, taking into account the pluralism of languages and innovation in techniques, will enable students to carry out research in the vast field of traditional and contemporary signs and symbols, in the multifaceted world of graphic communication. The course allows students to explore the traditional techniques that have progressively characterised the evolution of editorial graphic design in its various aspects: from graphic techniques, in their various forms and characteristics, closely linked to printing processes for graphics, to interaction with new operating methods, thanks to technical and technological developments. Illustration and layout techniques for editorial graphics will be explored, as well as coordinated image design. The use of computer graphics and photography will be of key importance. Graduates will acquire adequate technical and methodological mastery in order to be able to use methodologies, tools and expressive languages, enabling them to express themselves in various areas of visual communication. Another essential aspect will be knowledge of the English language and the acquisition of adequate skills in information management using IT tools.

Career prospects

Graduates of the course will be guided professionally in various public and private areas of design, with a focus on new and highly flexible career opportunities in a range of application types aimed at institutions, museums, small and medium-sized enterprises and large industry, with particular emphasis on visual communication, the organisation of space as a means of communication, from setting, staging and design to the complex territory connected with corporate communication. More specifically, they will be able to pursue careers in visual communication, either as freelance creative professionals or in employment opportunities within advertising agencies, graphic design studios, publishing houses, and newspaper offices. With different qualifications: creative, graphic designer, illustrator, graphic designer, web designer. Working with public and private organisations, the Academy will arrange the most suitable work placements and apprenticeships to help students achieve specific professional qualifications.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the first-level diploma course, applicants must be in possession of a secondary school leaving certificate or other recognised educational qualification obtained abroad. If recognised as suitable, this qualification entitles the applicant to undergo the practical aptitude test and interview to assess suitability.

Type of final assessment

The final assessment, aimed at verifying achievement of the learning objectives, consists of the presentation of a workshop-based project, coordinated under the guidance of one or more lecturers responsible for the specific diploma course. Consisting of a project, developed as part of the course, supported by: the preparation and subsequent presentation of a theoretical thesis, prepared in written form under the supervision of a supervisor chosen by the student. The thesis must be submitted to the supervisor and the academic office no later than 30 days before the date of its discussion. In conducting their thesis research, students are required to strictly follow the methodological and cultural framework defined with their supervising lecturer, as well as the work plan established with the lecturers regarding laboratory work. Failure to comply with this requirement entitles the lecturer or supervisors to withdraw the thesis topic and reject the student’s work by means of a formal decision to the head of the relevant teaching department.
