Learning Objectives

The aim of the Decoration course in the First Level Programme at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome is to provide knowledge and skills for a specific form of training, necessary for understanding the new languages and codes specific to decoration, together with meta-design capabilities in the field of art, with particular reference to theoretical and theoretical–practical disciplines, in order to understand and employ contemporary visual practices and languages. The central theme around which the entire training activity is developed is supported by a didactic structure focused on the ability to conceive and develop ideas, translating them both in the methodological and design phases and in the more strictly operational phase of the creation/production of the artwork.
By following a pathway aimed at the acquisition and in-depth study of theories, as well as of materials and new technologies applied to art, including their related cross-contaminations, the course seeks to develop interpretative skills related to complex phenomena connected to the world of the visual arts, its various contexts, and the interpretation of the real/virtual dimension of the image, within the framework of contemporary art and its dissemination. To this end, the laboratories are structured as open environments capable of translating ideas through consolidated experiences into a specific and integrated educational pathway, which will, from time to time, address the most relevant thematic areas.

Career prospects

Career prospects lie within the field of the visual arts and the related specialised professions, particularly in the areas of dissemination, production, and aesthetic and artistic practice, identifying a form of functionality that is not solely aesthetic, but also applied to everyday life, the territory, production processes, and commissions.
Graduates of the School will carry out professional activities in various fields, both in independent artistic practice and within the visual arts and creative industries, as well as by collaborating—according to the different areas of application—in the planning, design and implementation of specific decorative interventions, both in the field of traditional tools and techniques and in that of new technologies and new expressive languages.

Entry requirements

In order to enrol, applicants must hold a five-year upper secondary school qualification or another equivalent qualification recognised by the Italian State. International students: at the time of enrolment, international students must submit a certificate attesting to their knowledge of the Italian language, sufficient to ensure adequate comprehension and expression. Admission test: only in the event that the School or the Institution deems it necessary to introduce a limited number of places, enrolment will be subject to an admission test aimed at assessing the applicant’s expressive and communicative abilities. Type of admission test: the assessment will consist of a practical aptitude test and a theoretical interview.

Type of final assessment

The final examination consists of the discussion of a thesis based on an artistic production, characterised by an appropriate research methodology grounded in a unique and original personal elaboration developed through a specific integrated project, highlighting historical–critical analysis, synthesis, and logical, methodological and creative laboratory coordination. The thesis is supervised by two advisors: one responsible for the projectual and artistic component, and the other for the theoretical, critical and methodological component.
