Learning Objectives

The aim of the Second Level Experimental Course in Decoration is to provide specific training and advanced skills in the understanding of the languages and codes of Decoration together with a multidisciplinary preparation in the cultural artistic field, with particular reference to the theoretical learning of those phenomena of art that have characterised the past, and the knowledge of the practices and new languages of contemporary art. The central themes around the training activities are guidance, experimentation, artistic research and production, and the transmission of advanced knowledge relating to design methodology and its practical application. This educational programme, designed to provide in-depth knowledge of the theories of materials and the technological aspects of art, aims to develop the ability to interpret the complex phenomena related to the art world, its contexts, its dissemination, and the interpretation of reality and contemporary imagery. To this end, the workshops will be structured as a place for theoretical and practical experience, in a specific but integrated training programme that will touch on the most relevant themes, aiming to consolidate the ability to understand and plan decorative interventions through critical knowledge and the use of appropriate methodologies and tools, including those of an experimental nature.

Career prospects

Employment prospects are in the visual arts and related specialist professions in the field of aesthetic and artistic practice, communication and circulation of art in all operational sectors of the productive, artistic and cultural world, creating, designing, implementing or collaborating, according to the various fields of application, with the planning, design and implementation of specific decorative interventions, both in the field of traditional tools and new technologies and new linguistic expressions found in national and international events, as well as teaching in the relevant competitive examination classes

Entry requirements

Those who already hold a first-level academic diploma in Decoration or an equivalent first-level diploma or degree can enrol in the second-level course in Decoration. The transition from first- to second-level, within the Department of Visual Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, or for students who hold a first-level diploma in Decoration, is prioritised and conducted directly. For other students, admission is based on an entrance exam.

Type of final assessment

The final exam consists of the discussion of a thesis developed with the guidance of two speakers, one for the artistic/workshop part, the other for the theoretical-historical part. The thesis must be based on an appropriate research methodology involving unique and original personal work on a specific integrated project.
